Award-winning PGIN summer employment programs continue to benefit Ilocano youth, senior citizens

The Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte- Public Employment Service Office (PGIN-PESO) will be screening applicants for the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) starting on March 25.

The SPES program of the PGIN-PESO is geared towards the employment of Ilocano youth aged 16 to 30 years old, requiring them to render 15 days of service to different provincial offices.

Last February 2018, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region I awarded the PGIN-PESO as the provincial- and regional-level winner in the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) at the 2018 Regional PESO Congress in Angeles City, Pampanga.

Mrs. Anne Marie Lizzette B. Atuan, PGIN-PESO manager credits the success of PESO to the support of Governor Imee R. Marcos.

She shared, “Kung wala ang support at dedication ni Governor Imee R. Marcos, hindi natin ito magagawa at hindi rin natin matutulungan ang mga applicants.”

Students in secondary and tertiary levels, technical-vocational courses, and out of school youth (OSY) are eligible to apply for the program.

PGIN-PESO continues to strengthen its mandate through career orientations with local government units (LGUs) and partnerships with local and international employers. Last year, they also assisted the K-12 graduates for proper job counseling and support.

Summer Tourism Program pushes for a cleaner, greener province
“This season, we are strengthening the campaign for a cleaner and greener Ilocos Norte. We will be opening the season with a massive clean-up of our key tourism destinations,” remarked Provincial Tourism Officer, Mr. Aian B. Raquel.

As part of PGIN’s Tourism Ambassador Program, this year, the biannual special employment program headed by the Ilocos Norte Tourism Office (INTO) aims to maintain the cleanliness of the province’s coast lines, water systems, rivers, and, waterfalls through the concerted efforts from tourism ambassadors and Municipal Tourism Officers.

Recording more than 3 million day visitors in 2018, INTO aims to hire at least 500 ambassadors, senior citizen guides, and utility and medical personnel who will be deployed in the different tourist spots in Ilocos Norte for the months of April and May.

During the 13th Association of Tourism Officers in the Philippines and Department of Tourism (ATOP-DOT) Pearl Awards last October 2018, after two consecutive runner-up finishes, the Province of Ilocos Norte won first place in the 2018 Best Tourism-Oriented Local Government Unit (LGU) Category.

In particular, Pearl Awards’ screening committee commended the INTO’s Summer Tourism Program which immerses both the young and elderly as tour guides in different museums and churches in the province.

“This is the first effort in the country, specifically in the tourism sector, that employs senior citizens as tour guides in museums and churches. This is very special because it shows that our provincial policy on inclusivity is applied in that we employ very diverse demographics—from youth to senior citizens,” Raquel said.

The summer tourism program application will end on March 24.#
