In Laoag, 600 pre-schoolers start summer classes

LAOAG CITY, April 12 – Over 600 pre-schoolers trooped yesterday to the different public elementary schools in Laoag City for the start of the Kindergarten Summer Program of the Department of Education.

According to Mrs Edil H. Duran, Laoag Dep-Ed Program Supervisor, the KSP is part of the DepEd “Education for All” campaign by catering to pupils who will attend Kindergarten and Grade 1 this coming school year.

The pupils should be at least 5 and a-half years old to be able to join the program.

The program, which will run for 8 weeks from April 11 to June, aims to prepare these children to the ways of school life.
Mrs Duran observed that many children, especially those in remote barangays, experience fears in going to school and mingle with a big number of other children. Many do not want to be left behind by their parents.

“These children do not have previous school experience that is why we will teach them socialization and other learning skills necessary for the regular curriculum. This will prepare them adapt and adjust to school life. Through this program, the children will learn independence and develop a love for schooling” Mrs Duran said.

The Department of Education believes that in developing an early positive attitude, a child will value education, work harder and more likely finish elementary education.

The Aquino Administration aims to provide basic education to all and reduce the number of dropouts in the elementary level by intensifying the Early Childhood Care and Development kindergarten education coverage to all children. (Carlo P. Canares/PIA)
