Over 20 units of modernized Public Utility Jeepneys (PUJs) have arrived in Ilocos Norte and will soon operate to ply the Laoag-Pasuquin via the Bacarra route.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, assisted by Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board officials, had turned over the jeepney units to the Laoag-Bacarra-Pasuquin Transportation Group Inc. (LBPTGI) during a simple ceremony held at the Laoag International Airport last July 8, 2021.

“Jena” of Pasuquin town, who tried riding the jeepney’s maiden trip twice, described it as “more convenient and comfortable for daily commuters like her.”

“It is spacious, air-conditioned and with smart features such as digital signboards, buzzers, CCTV cameras, free Wi-Fi, eco-friendly, and have speed limit gadgets”, she added.

Metro Ilocos Norte Council General Manager Cipriano E. Martinez III said the LTFRB-approved modern jeepneys to ply in Ilocos Norte is the first for the Ilocos region in terms of quantity.

Moreover, Secretary Tugade expressed gratitude to the LBPTGI for working with the national government on the modernization program.

“Rest assured that the public transportation is not only safe and comfortable but more importantly reasonable. You have also provided yourself with the necessary employment mechanism so that you can duly and properly support your families. Ganyan po magtrabaho at makiisa ang Ilocano,” he said.

The LBPTGI modern jeepneys are not yet fully operational pending other required documents.

However, some units are presently deployed as shuttle service vehicles for APORs (Authorized Persons Outside Residence) who are entering Laoag City, now placed under MECQ.— (Blessing Angel V. Agliam, PGIN-CMO)
