City officials say: New site of a sanitary landfill project ok’d

LAOAG CITY— The city officials here have disclosed a six-hectare land in Brgy. Balatong, of this city, as the new possible site for the proposed Laoag’s modern sanitary landfill project.

During the recent public hearing on the proposed site, the city officials led by Vice Mayor Franklin Dante A. Respicio and the residents of Brgy. Balatong had a joint meeting in open discussion until all the concerned stakeholders have agreed together and approved to the proposed new site of the sanitary landfill.

City assessor Ruben Domingo said the residents had given their nod to the proposed site in their barangay with the condition that the city government will strictly follow the DENR guidelines as well as all rules, and regulations on public health from the construction work to its future maintenance.

Domingo added the public hearing was conducted as one of the prerequisites for the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) to be issued by DENR.

He stressed that they also tackled during the public hearing about the compensation of those lot owners whose property will be affected by the project.

Earlier, the DENR Mines Geosciences Bureau conducted soil testing in the area in which the result is good for the project.

Last year, DENR ordered the closure of the city’s open garbage dumpsite located in Brgy Lagui-Sail, this city. (tri-media report)
