About the Ilocos Sentinel

Ilocos Sentinel is a community-based weekly newspaper established on June 19, 2006 in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, located nearly 500 kilometers away north of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. This weekly newspaper is of general circulation in Laoag City, Batac City, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Abra, Pangasinan, Apayao, Cagayan Valley and many parts of the Philippines.

Facts show that owing to the dearth of a down-to-earth local weekly in these areas, Ilocos Sentinel was conceived in the year 2006 by U.P.-Diliman pol-sci graduate Mr. Excellency “Excel” Guiang as publisher until finally, the maiden issue was off the press of the same year and the first copies hit the street, so to speak, through the help of our friendly newsboys and newsstand vendors.

Like any infant business ventures for that matter, Sentinel encountered a rough-sailing operation during its initial years. However, with the help of Excel’s kith and kin who are also knowledgeable in newspapering, Ilocos Sentinel virtually becomes a family affair-run business of the Guiang clan now on its 6th year which continued to flourish to this date. By the way, the Guiang clan members of Laoag City and Paoay are reputed direct descendants of Don Martin Guiang, founder of Paoay town who ruled as its first chief executive in 1701-1704 as per Spain’s issued Royal Decree.

Due to the popular demands for a regional news online by many Ilocanos, their associates and even non-Ilocanos living here and abroad, our website dev.ilocossentinel.com was born in Sept. 2010. Since then, the website has become the leading online site of local news and articles being surfed globally.

More so, the website extends the newspaper’s reach beyond its traditional readers and makes it available in much wider and geographically diverse international readership. Ethnic Ilocanos living here and abroad and all other wide readers who have access to the internet surely are interested in knowing fast and accurate all the happenings in this part of the world via the Sentinel website.

Now on its 2nd year, Ilocos Sentinel website continued to pursue its goal for excellence in delivering fresh news and other vital information so that the people will know all significant events in the region.

In response to the rapidly changing needs of our readers, the Ilocos Sentinel, in coordination with JA Media Solutions is constantly working to improve our site with much easier navigability, better organized news content, as well as interactive tools and features.

So far, the Sentinel’s sitemeter has recorded over 23,000 readers as of this date, February 29, 2012, leap year. It pays, therefore, to advertise one’s commercial products or services as well as public service announcements in the Sentinel website because it has big volume of general readers compared to some local newspaper websites.#
