SP authorizes Gov. IRM to donate lot as site of new justice hall building

LAOAG CITY — Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos was authorized by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to donate a portion of a lot owned by the provincial government for the new site of a proposed Hall of Justice building in case the present Marcos Hall of Justice offices are relocated.

In a recent regular session, SP members headed by Vice Governor Angelo Barba unanimously approved a provincial resolution which authorized the governor to donate at least 2,600 sq. m. out of the 6,000 sq. m ., a lot owned by the provincial government situated near the National Food Authority building and the Provincial Agriculture Office at Barangay 2 Sta. Joaquina, Laoag City.

The resolution said that upon donation, construction work should be undertaken within one year and the lot should be exclusively used for the construction of the new justice hall building.

It may be recalled that two years ago the present old justice hall structure was gutted by fire due to alleged faulty electrical wiring.

For more than 50 years now, the present justice hall building houses several judicial courts as well as the provincial prosecutor’s office.

Regional Trial Court Executive Judge Benjamin Turgano  said he welcomed this new development as he lamented  that the present building is no longer suitable for use by the courts and prosecutor’s office.

Asked what would happen to the old building, he said, the provincial government, which owns it, may renovate and use it for future commercial purposes like the old Ilocano Heroes Hall building. (Theo Guiang)
