Kids taught how to brush their teeth well

LAOAG CITY, Feb. 27 (PIA) – A total of 750 day care pupils here were given free lecture-demo on the proper way of brushing teeth in line with the oral health care month celebration on Tuesday.

The Department of Health (DOH) and the Laoag City Health Office (LCHO) seek to educate the children on the proper oral health care which starts with the proper way of brushing teeth.

LCHO Dentist Ramosito Bernabe said that proper toothbrushing promotes oral wellness and prevents tooth decay.

“Brushing our teeth is the first and basic key to prevent us from having bad oral health that is why we have to teach our children this early,” he said.

Using a giant dental teeth model and a tooth brush, Bernabe demonstrated the proper procedure in brushing the teeth including the gums, tongue and some parts of the palate.

Incorrect execution of brushing said Bernabe may lead to oral injury that may cause bleeding in the soft parts of the mouth like the gums.

“The proper way to brush our teeth is very important otherwise instead of being healthy it may cause some injury when it is done improperly,” Bernabe said.

He emphasized the direction of brushing from up to down instead of doing it horizontal as it may lead to further decay of the upper part of teeth.

Laoag City joined the simultaneous toothbrushing day in Region 1 yesterday morning with the 750 day care pupils and their parents.

“We involved the parents in this activity so that they will be properly informed on the importance of oral health care and not to be taken for granted,” Mateo said.

Every year, the DOH spearheads a tootbrushing drill as part of the celebration of the oral health care month.

This year’s celebration carries the theme “Nakangiti ang Kinabukasan Kapag Ngipin ay Pinangangalagaan” (The future smiles when you take care of your teeth). (Cherry Joy D. Garma/PIA-1, Ilocos Norte)
