Councilor survives ambush

MARCOS, Ilocos Norte – A councilor of this town survived an assassination attempt staged by still unidentified gunmen at broad daylight in Barangay Pacifico here last September 30.

Ilocos Norte PNP Provincial Director Sr/Supt. Gerardo Ratuita said that Steward dela Cruz was driving his van on the way home after attending the morning flag-raising ceremony at the town hall when the motorcycle-riding gunmen fired at him.

Although the victim sustained gunshot wound on his thigh, he managed to flee from the ambush scene. He was later treated for wounds at the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH-MC) in Batac City.

Investigators recovered empty shells of M16 rifle at the crime scene.

Sources said that Dela Cruz is a political ally of “Mayor” Salvador Pillos during the recent election.

Police are still looking at various angles to determine the motive of the shooting.
