Ablan’s patriotism extolled

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte (Aug. 10)— A fitting tribute was given yesterday to the late war hero Governor Roque B. Ablan Sr. of Ilocos Norte on the occasion of his 110th birth anniversary with a message to Filipinos to emulate his patriotism at one of the most trying times of the nation – World War II.

Dr. Alma Ruby C. Torio, regional director of the Department of Education (DepEd) of Region 1, was the guest of honor and speaker at the formal rites held in this city.

Looking back at the exemplary values of the late governor during WWII, Torio said Ablan’s heroic deeds should inspire every Filipino.

The late governor was known for giving importance to education as he started his journey to serve the people by being a substitute classroom teacher.

Ablan’s heroism was proven for not surrendering to the Japanese invaders during WWII. Instead, he formed a group of warriors, who gallantly fought against the Japanese invaders in Northern Luzon.

Laoag City Mayor Chevylle Farinas and Ilocos Norte Senior Provincial Board Member Matthew Joseph M. Manotoc also graced the Ablan Day rites, marked with wreath-laying at the Ablan Shrine and a 21-gun salute.

Former Congressman Roque Ablan Jr., a son of the great patriot, thanked all the attendees and said he looks forward to future celebrations. Ablan Day is a special non-working holiday in Ilocos Norte. (Freddie G. Lazaro)
