300 SPES youths hired this summer

LAOAG CITY, April 29 – The Laoag City government has employed a new set of summer job workers under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES).

A total of 300 SPES beneficiaries this year have begun working in the different offices at the City Hall here on Monday.

Mayor Chevylle V. Farinas welcomed the beneficiaries during the orientation noting and reminding the students the importance of finishing education.

“We are very glad here in the city that we are able to help these students earn money during summer vacation to at least lessen the burden on the parts of the parents,” Farinas said.

Last year the city has a total of 350 student-workers. The 300 were hired by the city while the 50 were provided by the province as part of the augmentation of the province’s employment efforts.

Mylene Pascual, head of the city Public Employment Services Office (PESO), said that the city offices will be given at least five students each to accommodate all the 300 students.

“We will distribute the students according to their field of specialization but we will make sure that all of them will be accommodated,” Pascua said.

SPES is a bridge program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in cooperation with the local government units, educational institutions and private companies in the province.

These LGUs and institutions have pledged to employ in-school and out-of-school youth for a period of 20-52 days with a daily salary of P 311.

Following the scheme of the program, Laoag City will shoulder 60 percent or amounting to P1,115,640 of the student-workers’ salaries; while the DOLE-1 will pay the 40 percent or P743,760. (Cherry Joy D. Garma,PIA-1, Ilocos Norte)
