Man dies while trying to save troubled cousin

ADAMS, Ilocos Norte, April 22– Raymund Reyes y Ortega, 35, married, a construction worker, was killed when he fell off a 20-meter-deep rocky ravine while trying to save a cousin who was hanging in the cliff, police reported.

Capt. Artemio Clemente, the town police chief, said the victim accidentally plunged into the ravine while he attempted to save his cousin Mark Anthony Ortega, 31, and a bus conductor as an occupation.

Investigation showed that the cousins and several others had a drinking spree earlier at Brgy. Pansian, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.

The group, aboard motorcycles, later drove towards to this nearby upland town.

At this juncture, Mark Anthony met a road accident. His motorcycle went wayward and hung on the mountain slope as he clung to the edge of the cliff.

Raymund tried to rescue him but unluckily, his foot accidentally slipped and he lost balance leading to the tragic fall. He landed down the stony ravine with brook.

Rescuers rushed him to the Rural Health Unit but a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival. (tri-media report)
