PAOAY, Ilocos Norte, Dec 1 (PIA) – Ilocos Norte gave a financial share for the rehabilitation fund of Marawi City by giving the P1.3 million cash gifts collected during the Manotoc-Manglapus wedding last November 25.

Wedded couple, Lawyer Michael Marcos-Manotoc, grandchild of former President Ferdinand Marcos, and Carina Amelia Manglapus, granddaughter of former Foreign Affairs Secretary Raul Manglapus donated the said cash gifts called “Bitor” money.

Part of the Ilokano wedding culture is “Bitor” in which the wedding principal sponsors, relatives and guests would give cash to the groom and the bride as they dance on the reception floor.

Instead of keeping the “Bitor” money to start a family, Michael and Carina donated the P1.3 million for the rebuilding of schools in Marawi City.

Principal sponsor Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio said, “Everyone is very happy to hear that you are donating part of your wedding gifts to the rebuilding of Marawi, and especially renovating and rehabilitating a madrasah for the children.”

A madrasah is an Islamic institution.

Governor Imee Marcos, mother of the groom, said the Ilokanos have not forgotten our Marawi brothers and sisters, hence, we extend our help.

Other high-ranking officials including Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque and DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu also helped in raising donation for the Marawi City. (Ma. Joreina Therese A. Blanco/PIA1-ILOCOS NORTE)
