Toy gun sends young man to jail

SAN NICOLAS, Ilocos Norte – A 26-year-old man who was allegedly brandishing a “toy gun” in public was arrested for violation of the election gun ban in Barangay 11, this town Thursday night.

Police investigators said that they received a report that the suspect was spotted in a public place carrying a suspected handgun.

When the operatives arrived at the scene, the “gun-wielding man” allegedly threw something on the roadside. He tried to escape, but operatives cornered him.

It turned out the suspected weapon was a mere toy gun, a replica of cal. 38 revolver, owned by his son.

Police said they will charge the suspect with violation of Comelec gun ban.

The Comelec gun ban states that “firearms, as defined in existing laws, rules and regulations, shall include airguns, air-soft guns, and replicas/imitations of firearms in whatever form that can cause an ordinary person to believe that they are real.”

Police authorities have warned the public not to carry outside the residence or display in public any kind of toy guns to avoid criminal offense related to the Comelec gun ban rules. (tsg)
