San Nicolas Town Emerges Grand Slam Winner

LAOAG CITY, March 29 – The Regional Development Council in Region 1 has proclaimed the municipality of San Nicolas in Ilocos Norte as the grand slam winner in its three awards.

San Nicolas was again adjudged as the Best Performing Local Government Unit for 1st to 3rd class municipality in Region 1 for CY 2010. This is in recognition of the exemplary effectiveness of the LGU’s performance and capabilities in such areas as governance, administration, social services, economic development, environmental management based on the Local Governance Performance Measuring System (LGPMS).

The town was also declared the champion in the search for Best LGU-NGO Partnership with its entry, “LGU San Nicolas-Gelfi: Partners for KalikaSanicolas.” The entry showed San Nicolas partnering with Green Earth Legacy Foundation Inc (GELFI), a non-government organization, in promoting environmental and livelihood development programs aimed at preserving the environment.

San Nicolas was likewise adjudged as the 2nd runner up in the Best LGU Practices for the 1st-3rd class municipal category in the region for its entry “Can We Stand a Loan?: The LGU San Nicolas’ Debt Defying Experience.” The entry showed how the huge structure that is the San Nicolas Public Market was built with no loans incurred but merely on the honest, transparent and dedicated governance and leadership of Mayor Alfred Valdez Jr., and the unity, hard work and determination of San Nicolenos and town officials.

Mayor Valdez said these great accomplishments are results of the unified workings of “three actors of development:” government, the citizenry, and non-government organizations.

“It is my belief that with a unified people inspired by an honest government, our town will have a tranquil sojourn to prosperity and greatness,” Mayor Valdez said.
