PGIN celebrates nutrition month

With the theme, “Pagkainnggulayugaliin, araw-arawitongihain”, Ilocos Norte celebrated nutrition month last July 18, 2012 at the Provincial Capitol of Ilocos Norte. Now on its 38th year, the celebration focuses mainly on the importance of eating vegetables.

 

Activities include the first Veggie Fun Walkwhich started from Laoag City Centennial Arena and ended at the Provincial Capitol, launching of Veggie Mini Trade Fair, mascot contest of different types of vegetables, feeding programand the nutrition and diet counseling by the Nutritionist Dietician Association of the Philippines, Ilocos Norte chapter during its kick off program.

 

Participants of the program were the Provincial Nutrition Committee-Technical Working Group, National Food Authority (NFA), Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG), DepEd, Deaprtment of Agrarian Reform (DAR), Provincial Veterinary (PVET) office, Department of Social Welfare and Development Office (DSWDO), PBO, PPDO, Provincial Health Office (PHO), TESDA, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Department of Labor and Employment(DOLE). Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAO) of the Municipal Nutrition Committee and the Barangay Nutrition Scholars of the Barangay Nutrition Committee also attended the program.

 

During the program, winners of the mascot contest were awarded to Pagudpud (1st place), Sarrat (2nd place) Paoay (3rd place), Burgos and Pinili for the 4th and 5th place respectively.

 

Certificates of appreciation were also given to the outstanding MNAO like Bangui, Bacarra, Pasuquin, Sarrat and Paoay.  Among the Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholarswho also received the certificates were the BNS of Bangui, Bacarra, Pasuquin, Sarrat and Currimao.

 

Hon. Jessie Galano, ABC President and Ex officio Member of the SangguniangPanlalawigan spoke on behalf of Governor Imee R. Marcos. He said that the government is planning to promote vegetable gardening as a source of additional food and income and enhance school food programs to improve healthy eating. He also said that it is very helpful for children to have awareness of good nutrition at a young age to absorb more and improve their learning capability and be able to handle all their school activities. –
