Mothers with special children undergo lecture in Autism

LAOAG CITY, Jan. 30 (PIA) In their bid to promote a better public impression towards special children, the provincial government of Ilocos Norte hosts a lecture in autism today enjoining mothers with special children in the province.

According to Caroline Cera of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development (PSWD), the discussion was designed to educate the parents of the condition of their children.

“We start to educate the parents first before the public so that they can fully understand and support their children, especially emotionally” Cera said.

Coincidental to the event is the organization of Autism Association Chapter in Ilocos Norte.

According to Cera, the organization and accreditation will entitle the parents to avail of the benefits that the national government specifically the Department of Health is providing to special children.

The participant-mothers are from the five Stimulation and Therapeutic Activity Center (STAC) branches across the province.

STAC is a center which provides a free rehabilitation, education and stimulation activities to children with disabilities that will help them to enhance the cognitive development of the children.

The event is in observation of the provincial government with the National Autism Consciousness week celebrated on Jan. 21-27.

This year’s celebration carries the theme “Autismo Alamin: Pagtanggap at Pag-unawa Palaganapin” (Know Autism: Accept, Understand and Promote) which aims primarily to intensify understanding persons with autism and their acceptance as productive members of society who have also their inherent rights and dignity.

With this, the provincial government hopes that the misconception of the public to the autistic, little by little, will be diverted into something really good, that they will get more conscious towards autism. (Cherry Joy Discaya-Garma)
