“Itik”, the escapee surrenders after hiding for 3 days

SAN NICOLAS, Ilocos Norte, April 20—Jake Bumanglag, alias “Itik”, an inmate of the Ilocos Norte provincial jail who escaped from the GRASMHospital  in Laoag City where he was confined for treatment of his epilepsy, voluntarily surrendered at 1 o’clock this morning.

Bumanglag gave himself up to a team of INPJ guards who rushed to his house at Brgy. 14 this town at early dawn after hiding for three days.

To ensure his safety, he was directly locked up at the detention cell for senior citizen inmates at the old building instead of cell No. 11, his prison cell origin.

An earlier report said Bumanglag escaped unnoticed by his jail guards by jumping through the hospital window at dawn Monday.

Jail Warden Dario Estavillo described Bumanglag as a “big headache” at the INPJ for repeatedly violating many jail rules such as secret selling of packed cigarettes smuggled inside the jail by an outside contact, and other offenses.

Bumanglag had gained the ire of many fellow inmates because he falsely blamed them whenever he had committed a violation inside the jail, the warden added.

Estavillo said that Bumanglag had already been convicted for theft and swindling but what delayed his transfer to the New Bilibid prison in Muntinlupa was his pending case of an illegal drug before the regional trial court here. (w/ tri-media report)
