INEC Gives 5% Senior Citizens Discount on Power Bills

LAOAG CITY – Senior citizens will now enjoy a five percent discount on their power bills.

The Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative has started accepting applications for the power discount to senior citizens whose monthly power consumption does not exceed 100 kilowatt hours.

The discount privilege was in compliance with Republic Act 9994 or the expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 granting additional benefits to a qualified elderly.

Rosita Bumanglag, Inec’s finance manager, said the discount is applicable only to residential consumers.

“The privilege does not cover senior citizens who are engaged in commercial or industrial trading,” she said.

As an additional requirement, the electric meter must have been registered under the name of the senior citizen for at least a year prior to his application for a discount.

Menchie Cariaga, chief of Inec’s Institutional Services Department, said the discount will be reflected on the power bill a month after the approval of the application.

An applicant must submit the following requirements to be entitled to the discount:

  • birth certificate
  • a valid senior citizen’s card
  • proof of actual residency
  • proof of billing.

A senior citizen who cannot apply personally to the INEC office for the discount may authorize another to file his documents on his behalf. (Cristina Arzadon – PIA)
