Ilocos Norte radio-TV broadcasters join nationwide tree planting

LAOAG CITY, August 30 (PIA) – Members of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) – Ilocos Norte-Laoag City chapter led the planting of more than 1,000 saplings of Neem and Talisay trees during the 4th national simultaneous Oplan Broadcastreeing on Saturday.

KBP Chapter President Cely Paz said the tree planting activity was held in vacant lots of the Ilocos Norte Regional School of Fishery in Barangay Lapaz here.

The simultaneous national Oplan Broadcastreeing, which started in 2011, was participated by the more than 39 KBP local chapters with the support from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), other national government agencies and local non- government organizations (NGOs).

In Ilocos Norte, this year local KBP Chapter’s Oplan Broadcastreeing was reinforced by the DENR, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the students and teachers from the Ilocos Norte Regional School of Fishery, Laoag City government, barangay officials and members of Province of Ilocos Norte Adventurers, Kampers, Bikers, Eco- Tourism (PINAKBET) group.

“Our annual tree planting activity since 2011 is one of our commitments to conserve our environment against the emerging effect of climate change,” Paz said.

Ilocos Norte’s Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) Juan De Los Reyes said the “Oplan Broadcastreeing” is an urban greening activity supporting the National Greening Program of the administration of President Benigno Aquino III.

“The broadcastreeing program focuses the greening of urban areas because several people’s organizations in the province are responsible in the reforestation of vacant lots in the rural areas,” Delos Reyes said.

“The tree saplings are bigger than seedlings. Thus, I’m hoping a higher survival rate of the saplings planted this year,” he added. (FREDDIE G. LAZARO)
