Fiscal’s Husband Killed in Ambush

LAOAG CITY, Jan. 15 (PIA) – Unidentified gunmen shot and killed the husband of a city prosecutor along a national road in Brgy. Santiago, Solsona, Ilocos Norte early this morning.

The victim identified as businessman Edward Chan, 38, was on board his white Mitsubishi L-300 van, when two gunmen riding in tandem on board a motorcycle shot and killed him 6:05 am early today.

Chan, husband of city prosecutor Gina Chan, had just left the Solsona public market where he owned a store and was on his way home when he was waylaid. He died on the spot.

Police Insp. Arnel Tabaog, Solsona OIC chief of police, said the victim was shot in the neck, arm and body. Investigators found seven spent shells and three slugs of cal.55 pistol bullets at the crime scene.

“His van rammed a roadside tree after the shooting,” Tabaog said. The victim was pinned behind the steering wheel.

Tabaog said the gunmen apparently moved closer to the bloodied victim and finished him off based on the empty shells found near the vehicle.

Tabaog said the police are looking on the robbery angle as motive behind the shooting.

Chan’s wife told the police that her husband was carrying more than P40,000 cash at the time of the incident. The money was missing when the police searched the victim’s belongings.

Tabaog said investigators are also looking whether the killing had to do with the victim’s wife work as government fiscal. (Cristina Arzadon – PIA Ilocos Norte)
