Burgos, Nueva Era win Cleanest, Greenest & Safest LGU titles

LAOAG CITY, Oct. 18 — The municipalities of Burgos and Nueva Era, both in Ilocos Norte, bagged the cleanest, greenest and safest local government unit titles in the recently concluded provincial clean and green search, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office said.

The municipality of Nueva Era topped the rating in the 1st to 3rd class municipality category while San Nicolas, the contender, placed second.

In the 4th to 5th class municipality category, Burgos ranked number one followed by Banna, and third is the municipality of Sarrat.

Nueva Era and Burgos possessed all the required facilities and programs for the maintenance of cleanliness in their place. These include the presence of well-kept and maintained slaughter house and public market.

The presence of landfill, the zero-waste segregation program, the visibility of nursery for each barangay and Material Recovery Facility were among the indicators being rated.

Arsenio G. Sandi, senior forest management specialist and head of the evaluation committee said, “It’s good to see that our LGUs are eager to participate in this competition.”

The evaluation team had a unanimous rating for both of the top cleanest, greenest and safest performing municipalities.

The municipalities had an extensive preparation for the competition. All of them underwent the pre-assessment test and had to pass it to qualify for the search.

The pre-assessment test included the document validation of all the regular activities conducted by the LGUs in the maintenance of their programs on clean and green. It also included their programs on safeguarding the welfare of their people, followed by field validation by the provincial validating team.

The members of the validating team were representatives from the Department of Education, Department of Interior and Local Government, Public Attorney’s Office, Provincial Planning and Development Office, Philippine National Police, Department of Health, Non-Government Organization, Department of Public Works and Highways and the Philippine Information Agency.
