Bacarra Ambush

BACARRA, Ilocos Norte (Aug. 19) – A former barangay chairman and his 18-year-old daughter were shot to death in an ambush staged by two unidentified motorcyclists riding in tandem last night, August 18, in Barangay San Pedro here, police said.

Police identified the fatalities as Dionisio Velasco, 64 and his daughter, Dianne Rose, a third year nursing student of Divine Word College of Laoag. Velasco, a businessman engaged in buy and sell of garlic and palay, died on the spot and Dianne succumbed to bullet wounds while being treated at the GRASMH emergency room.

Investigation showed that Velasco drove his Tamaraw Fx and went to fetch Dianne in the school at DWCL before 7 pm. On their way home to Brgy. Duripes here, the assailants waylaid them.

Police recovered empty shells of cal. 45 pistol at the crime scene. Found from Velasco’s possession were wallet with P40,000 cash and licensed cal. 45 pistol loaded with bullets. He apparently tried to draw his gun and retaliate but the assassins were too quick to finish him off, investigators surmised.

Probers led by police chief C/I Julius Niegos said they were looking into politics and business angle as the possible motive of the killing. (Excel D. Guiang)
