LAOAG CITY, May 10 — Storm Bebeng is moving out of the country but government disaster councils have advised residents to remain alert for the effects of monsoon rains.
The National Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) said water systems that are likely to be affected by rains are the rivers and streams in the towns of Bacarra and Vintar and the Padsan River in Laoag and Quioait River in Batac City.
“People living in the low-lying areas in these rivers are advised to take precautions,” the NDRRMC said in its public advisory.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) has lowered its storm signal in Ilocos provinces including Ilocos Norte beginning Monday night. The province was placed under storm signal number 1 beginning Monday due to heavy rains caused by Bebeng.
PAGASA said the province will still experience monsoon rains as typhoon Bebeng moves away from the country. At 10 am today, Bebeng was estimated at 50 kms east of Basco, Batanes. Only the Batanes province remains at storm signal number 1 as of Tuesday morning.
The weather bureau said Bebeng will be located at 400 kms north, northeast of Basco, Batanes on Wednesday morning and 810 kms north, northeast of Basco, Batanes or 90 kms northwest of Okinawa, Japan on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, Pagasa is keeping watch over a potential new cyclone that may enter Philippine territory as early as Thursday.
If the disturbance becomes a cyclone and enters Philippine territory, it will be codenamed “Chedeng,” the third cyclone in the country this year.
