LAOAG CITY, February 3 (PIA) – The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) has continued drumming up support for the government’s climate change mitigation campaign and has found allies among college students here.
PIA ‘s Director General Jose Mari Oquiñena flew to this city on Monday, February 1 and met the students of the Northwestern University where he cited their role on environmental preservation for their sake and future generations.
Oquiñena made the pitch for the school’s climate change education program which was part of NU’s special events marking its 84th foundation anniversary with a theme: “Rising Up to the Challenge.”
“How can we do our share to restore and preserve our environment for the sake of the future generations?” he asked.
“(Having small resources) is not a disadvantage in the campaign against climate change. If we can pool these small resources and efforts that would (translate to a big thing),” he added.
The national government has made inroads on climate change mitigation and has enlisted the public and private sectors to join the cause.
Beginning 2014, the PIA partnered with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the conduct of a series of nationwide advocacy campaign to bring the climate change issue to the doorsteps of the communities and schools.
Oquiñena said the most important thing for the success of the advocacy is the full support and commitment of every Filipino citizen.
“How can we say to our neighbor that to prevent floods… we must manage our garbage” he asked.
“We need to learn how to manage our water resources. We need to segregate and recycle our wastes. We need to realize that the earth is the extension of the beauty that we have,” he said. (Freddie G. Lazaro/PIA-1 Ilocos Norte)
