WALK FOR LIFE: A Celebration on the Contribution of Elderly in the Nation’s Building

“Pagkilala sa Kakayahan, Ambag at Paglahok ng mga Nakatatanda sa Lipunan,” is this year’s theme for the Elderly Filipino Week, which commence on 1 October. This year, Vice President Leny Robredo joins the Department of Health (DOH) with Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), champions and partners in celebrating the active role of our elderly in the society as well as in the nation building.

Elsewhere in the country, this year’s event is marked with a “Walk for Life.” “Activities lined-up for the day are designed to bring our elderly together. In Metro Manila, the day will start with an early morning warm-up light exercise followed with some 30-minute leisure walk. The walk aims to rekindle the spirit among our senior citizens and the community as a whole on the importance of healthy lifestyle and wellness,” Health Secretary Pau Ubial remarked.

Also on that day, there will be an on-site health services offered where attendees may avail. Medical consultations, random blood-sugar screening, cholesterol screening, bone scanning, blood-pressure measurement, nutritional assessment and vaccination will be some services available. Philhealth, for their part will set up service desks to answer queries and will accept membership enrollment.

Other government agencies will likewise be joining the event to provide various services to elderly. The event will be absolutely open to everyone.

The first week of October has been declared Elderly Filipino Week by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 470 series of 1994.
