BINAY CONDEMNS SHOOTING OF FORMER PTA HEAD; CALLS FOR STRICT ENFORCEMENT OF GUN CONTROL RULES, COOPERATION BETWEEN POLICE AND SUBDIVISION OFFICERS

Vice President Jejomar C. Binay today strongly condemned the shooting of former Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) head Nixon Kua and his older brother.

Binay also called for greater cooperation between authorities and subdivision officials in order to enforce stronger safety measures inside gated communities and urged the police to strictly enforce gun control measures.

“His shooting inside an exclusive subdivision underscores the need to improve the cooperation between the authorities and subdivision officials in enforcing security in our neighborhoods,” he said.

“It is also high time that we strictly implement existing gun control regulations. I trust that our police will find the perpetrators soon and bring them to justice,” Binay said.

Nixon and his brother were shot at close range Saturday night in front of the latter’s home in Calamba, Laguna. Nixon was shot in the face while another bullet pierced his brother’s lungs.

Nixon was formerly a reporter for the Philippine Star and now writes a column for the tabloid Pilipino Star Ngayon. He was a member of President Joseph Estrada’s media bureau during the latter’s presidential campaign in 1998 and was then appointed as head of the PTA.

He was also a member of the organization of former senior government officials who opposed former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and leaked documents pertaining to the fertilizer scam, the overpriced NBN/ZTE deal and the anomalous public works contracts questioned by the World Bank.
