I’ve been reading a lot about effective goal setting these past few months. I want to achieve my goals the soonest. Who doesn’t want to, right? And based on my conversations with several successful people, a common denominator is goal setting coupled with proper planning of the actions needed to achieve identified goals.
So I asked myself, if goal setting is a requirement to success, why not learn everything I can?

Major Definite Purpose
From these conversations and readings, I learned six important procedures in effective goal setting. They are
1. On a blank sheet of paper, write 10 goals you would like to achieve in the next 12 months.
2. From these 10 goals, identify the one goal that if you achieve will result to the greatest impact on your life. This one goal is your major definite purpose for the next 12 months or until you achieve it.
3. Rewrite this one goal as a question. For example, you have identified having P500,000 in your bank account by December 31, 2013 as your main purpose. Then, rewrite it as: “How can I save P500,000 by December 31, 3013?”
4. Since you just wrote a question, it deserves answers. From this question, identify at least 20 actions you can do that will help you get closer to achieving your major definite purpose. Go outside the box. Think creatively. Your imagination is your only limitation. It doesn’t matter how small or how grandiose such an action is, what is important is that when done it will bring you closer to achieving your goal.
5. From these at least 20 actions, identify one action that you can do immediately.
6. Work on your goal everyday which means performing any one of the identified actions.

Everyday, Do
Among the six steps, doing something everyday to move closer to your goal is the most challenging. It requires tremendous energy and single-minded focus to get an idea, a plan from paper to reality.
Personally, I find it very helpful to remind myself every moment the why behind my goal, my major definite purpose.
For example, in the P500,000 example, you might have identified it as the the goal that if achieved will have the greatest impact on your life right now because you intend to use it to finance your child’s college education – to finance a specific purpose trust fund for your child.
Keep that reason in mind every moment. It will make doing something every day less tedious especially when you are already burdened with day-to-day problems.

Interesting Money Facts. If I have money to burn, I’d burn it like this guy who just paid US $8.14 million for a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta ‘Competizione’. It is a sweet car. I wonder if he takes it to fetch his kid from school or just put it behind glass walls.
Anyway, I don’t have that much money yet to spend on a car, but I checked the current prices of 2013 Ferrari Berlinetta. Base price is just US $330,000. Isn’t US $330,000 an amount that inspires the word ‘just’ beside a mountain-full of US $8.14 million?
He could have bought about 25 2013 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta instead of just one car!
