Laughter exploded inside the session hall of Sangguniang Panglalawigan (provincial board) at the Ilocos Norte capitol, Laoag City on Aug. 13, a media report said. The board members led by Vice Gov. Angelo Marcos Barba were seen laughing. Capitol beat reporters and visitors were laughing too. Others giggled. What was funny anyway? No clown was seen inside the room. It all started when outgoing ex-officio board member Quezon Alejandro, former provincial councilors league president, delivered a funny-worded farewell speech before his SP colleagues. Alejandro was in festive mood as he bade goodbye to his colleagues citing their “kindness and understanding” extended to him during his three-year stint at SP.

Alejandro’s voice clip of his speech was aired by local broadcast stations in Laoag. His audience could not hold their laughter when Alejandro (in funny and poetic tone) cautioned the SP members in the dialect : “Saandak a tultuladen gapu ta idi naggurro-od ken nagkimat, ni Alejandro ti tinamaan ti kimat. Kawawa po ako.” (Don’t do what I did because when thunder and lightning came, Alejandro was hit by lightning. Pity me).

Reading between the lines, Alejandro spoke in jest about his “sponsor” in his political career. He recalled that when he was then a neophyte in the SP, he enjoyed to have been a member of the “committee on silence”. Laughter burst anew in the hall when he said that as time went by, he learned to become independent-minded, learned to argue on vital legislative measures until he unwittingly displeased his political “sponsor”. He jokingly described it as his grave mistake.

An erstwhile fiscal before he joined politics, lawyer Alejandro is now at home in Piddig, Ilocos Norte where he will serve anew his constituents as re-elected municipal councilor of Piddig. I am sure he shuns to have a “ political sponsor” any more. Come to think of it, he is now a full-fledged free man who could debate on anything under the sun every time Vice Mayor Gener Aquino bangs the gavel to preside the Sangguniang Bayan (municipal council) sessions in Piddig town for the next three years.#(JUN R.
