LAOAG CITY, June 21 (PIA) – Two successive earthquakes shook Ilocos Norte towns at past two in the morning on Tuesday, June 20.

The stronger tremor struck at 2:13 a.m. registering at magnitude 4.3 and followed by a 3.6 magnitude quake at 2:34 a.m. Both were tectonic in origin.

A bulletin released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenters of the earthquakes were recorded in Burgos and Adams, Ilocos Norte, respectively.

However, their intensity was felt in Burgos and Laoag City during the first quake while the second was felt in Burgos and Pasuquin towns and in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

Residents in Laoag City said that a longer and harder shake was felt on the second quake, 21 minutes after the first one.

The Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) through the resiliency office has been conducting earthquake drill since last year to prepare the residents here for disaster.

A ‘duck, cover, and hold’ campaign was constantly discussed to the people as proper actions in addressing earthquake incidents. Some evacuation centers were also identified for their safety. (Cherry Joy Discaya-Garma)
