Region 1 inventors qualified to compete for NICE

After the success of the Region 1 Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE) held at Robinsons Place in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte last week, the winners of each category were urged to enhance their inventions in preparation for the National Invention Contest and Exhibit (NICE) next year.

Out of the six entries under the utility model category, the Mathematical Game Device of Bobby F. Cabe from San Fabian, Pangasinan garnered first place followed by Prof. Imma Concepcion G. Estabillo of the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-Mid La Union Campus (DMMMSU-MLUC) in San Fernando City, La Union with her technology titled “A process producing spray-dried roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) Powder and the Product Produced Thereof”, second place and a research titled “A process of Producing Chevon with bitter Chevon stew (pinapaitan) in retort pouch” of Dr. Annabelle G. Valdez, Jonathan Nayga, and Rossana Peralta from the DMMMSU- Institute of Agriculture in Rosario, La Union, placing third. The top three under this category received an amount of Php25,000, Php10,000, Php5,000, respectively.

On the other hand, the Modified Smoke House of Mr. Zaldy A. Fernandez from Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Batac City, Ilocos Norte won the LIKHA Award (Creative Research) category with an amount of Php20,000. This was followed by the JOVIMIN, an Innovative Micronutrient Supplement for Goats (1st runner up), and Musculo Skeletal Disease Prevention Capacity of the Developed Dentist’s Chair (2nd Runner up) of Dr. Jovita M. Datuin from the Department of Agriculture RFO1 in San Fernando City, La Union and Dr. Charlene Morante of Virgen Milagrosa University in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, respectively.

Furthermore, participants of the DMMMSU-MLUC got the top three places under the SIBOL Award (Student Creative Research) category for college with their Multi-platform Rice Insect Pest Control and Management System, Self Sustained Generator, and Dual Powered Dehydrator for the Php20,000, Php10,000, Php5,000 prizes, respectively.

The Philippine Science High School-Ilocos Region Campus (PSHS-IRC) in San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur also reigned among other contenders for the Sibol Award (High School) category when the student research on “Design and Synthesis of Graphene/Zinc Oxide Hybrid Electrodes for Flexible High Performance Supercapacitors” and “Dye Sensitized Solar Cell Using Synthesized Graphene from Carbon Rod of Used Disposable Batteries” bagged the regional winner and 1st Runner-up, respectively. The 2nd Runner-up was given to Sinait National High School in Sinait, Ilocos Sur with its Innovative Motion Induced Battery Charger. The winners per category are expected to be competing nationwide.
