“I’m retiring from politics” — Congressman Fariñas

BACARRA, Ilocos Norte– First district Congressman Rodolfo C. Fariñas disclosed that he is retiring from politics to focus more attention on his children and grandchildren.

Rep. Fariñas, now in his third term, gave the disclosure in a brief press interview here shortly after he and his daughter Provincial Board member Ria Fariñas and Agriculture Regional Director Lucrecio Alviar Jr. distributed assorted farm machinery and equipment to various Zanjeras of the province’s first district last Oct. 15.

He was reacting to reports that he was being groomed by PDP-Laban to run for senator in the midyear election in 2019.

As early this year, he recalled, President Duterte personally offered him to run for senator but declined it saying he’s retiring from politics.

He added that even PDP’s former Senate President Nene Pimentel had texted him on Saturday night of Oct. 14 asking him to join their PDP senatorial slate but he declined it for the same reason that he wanted to retire now from politics.

Fariñas, 66, who first served as city mayor of Laoag at a young age of 28, provincial governor of Ilocos Norte and now the congressman, said he thinks he had given his contribution to serve the public and his wish now is to be given the chance to serve his children and his growing grandchildren.
